The tragic incident on Thursday, May 22, occurred when the priest was on his way to conduct church worship, according to Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander, Peter Mulinge.
Father Bett, known for his tireless efforts to promote peace in the Kerio Valley, is labeled as an example of an unselfish ministry and unstable faith.
His death has shaken the community, where he was highly respected for his commitment to spiritual services, education, and reconciliation.

Father Bett, who turned two years in the priesthood in November 2024, celebrated the achievement a few months ago with a family in the Chepsirei area and their young child, where they prayed, shared cakes and celebrated happily.
He was always generous to the community, showing service leadership in words and actions.
This was revealed during the celebrations and in its services across the area. Additionally, he volunteered to serve in the countryside, where he often ran mass in poor conditions without the basic church equipment such as a table or altar.
Marakwet West MP mourns the death of Father Bett
Marakwet West MP, Timothy Toroitich, mourned the murdered priest as a close friend of the TAA of hope.
“Father Bett was a man of strong faith.
Prior to being organized in a new TOT parish, Father Bett had served in the Nerkwo parish.
In addition to his spiritual responsibilities, he provided important advice on the development of several local schools, including Chebiemit Boys, Kapkoros Girls, Marakwet Boys, and Cheptulon Girls, contributing to their professional and moral growth.
Quoting Thomas Jefferson’s famous phrase, MP Toroitich expressed hope that Father Bett’s blood would not be shed in vain.
“Father Bett’s blood will sprinkle a peace tree in the Kerio valley,” he said, vowing that the priest’s heritage would continue to be a source of healing and unity in the area.
At present, sadness has taken the opportunity to happiness, with residents calling on the government and security forces to take immediate and effective action to restore peace and protect the lives of the innocent.
