Mumias East constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has hit out at the police bosses just a day after the court freed him on cash bail.

Addressing a crowd of people in Limuru, Kiambu County, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, Salasya condemned Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and the Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin, for sending tens of police officers to arrest him.

The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) lawmaker who has since declared his interest in the 2027 presidential contest warned the police bosses to use public resources responsibly.

Salasya warned that the National Police Service and the DCI are independent offices that should not be interfered with by anyone, including the head of state who is the appointing authority.

Nataka niseme yakwamba Inspector General of Police, ujue yakwamba magari unatumia, salary unapata na kila kitu hadi nyumba, yote ni pesa ya mwananchi. Nataka nikuulize kwa heshima kwamba that is an independent institution. Yes, we know the appointing authority is one person, the president according to the constitution, but your office is independent, and no one should interfere with it, kwa sababu tumebaki tu miaka miwili na tunaeza kuja kuwa na serikali mpya ambayo pia utataka kuifanyia kazi,” Salasya said.

Salasya warns DCI Amin

He went ahead to tell the DCI boss Amin to serve all Kenyans without bias, warning him against criminalising those trying to provide oversight against the Kenya Kwanza regime.

Na pia nataka niulize Director of Criminal Investigations yakwamba pia wewe umechaguliwa pale kuserve wananchi wa kawaida na unalipwa na pesa ya mkenya. Lazima uheshimu wakenya, and you should not intimidate anyone by criminalising everyone just trying to provide oversight. Nakumbuka wakati William Ruto alikuja; alikuwa anasema opposition ifanye kazi yake na serikali ifanye kazi yake,” he said in a video shared via his X account.

He further argued that it was shocking to see tens of police officers with sophisticated weapons arrest him violently without any mercy.

Moreover, Salasya told the police bosses that what happened to him and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya should not be repeated.

Ilikuwa ni ya kushangaza sana kuona mtoto mdogo kama mimi kutumiwa maaskari zaidi ya kumi na kitu na kila mtu amebeba bunduki kubwa kubwa. Sasa mlitaka mimi nijifanye aje? Wewe Amin, ata huwezi hurumia mimi? Have mercy. You were given that office by God so that you can protect Kenyans and not intimidate them. So I want to tell you, please, let it be the last thing kwa yale ambayo imetendeka kule kwa Natembeya, ile ilifanyika kwangu na ile ambayo mlikuwa mmepangia ule kiongozi wa kule Mt Kenya, mheshimiwa Rigathi.” Salasya affirmed.

Salasya’s release

Salasya was on Monday, May 19, 2025, set free on a surety bond of Ksh500,000 or a cash bail of Ksh200,000 after being arraigned before Magistrate Paul Mutai at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, where he was charged with hate speech contrary to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission Act.

is accused of publishing inciteful remarks likely to stir ethnic hatred on his verified X (previously Twitter) handle.

According to the charge sheet seen by K24 Digital, the post that Salasya made on May 10, 2025, is the one that landed him in trouble.

Salasya is said to have made the said post at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya.

“On the 10th of May 2025, at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, knowingly and intentionally published insulting words online, to wit, “Luos are number one enemies of Luhya people. We must fight back this narrative of Luos, or they sink us. They are in gvt but still fighting an innocent person. Ama tuwatahiri iishe” while using your verified X account (formerly Twitter) handle @pksalasya and named Hon. Peter Salasya, knowing it to be insulting, inciteful and well calculated to stir up ethnic hatred between the Luhya and Luo communities,” the charge sheet read.

However, the lawmaker pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released, with the case set for mention and further directions on June 4, 2025.

Salasya was arrested along the Isiolo-Nanyuki highway and locked up at Nairobi Central Station on Friday, May 16, 2025.
