Tanzania: Former Kenyan Chief Justice David Maraga was allowed to enter Tanzania on Monday morning, May 19, to attend a court case of Tanzania’s opposition leader and Chadema Party Chairman Tundu Lissu.

This came as a surprise considering that several other prominent Kenyan people, including former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and prominent activists, were denied the opportunity to enter the country.
The arrival of Maraga in Dar es Salaam was quite different from how the people of his country were being treated.
Mutunga, human rights defenders Hanifa Adan and Hussein Khalid were detained after arriving at Julius Nyerere International Airport.

The group had traveled to look at Lissu’s case facing him in court, who is facing a trial of treason and publishing false statements.
This is the first time the opposition leader has come to the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court since the start of the cases.
Wearing a t -shirt on the slogan “There is no reform, no election,” Lissu’s arrival in Lissu pulled a large crowd of Chadema supporters gathered outside the courtroom to show solidarity.

The slogan was reported to be viewed by the government as an incitement.
After seeing Maraga in court, Lissu expressed his joy and gratitude.
“My good friend, the chief judge? I thought you were rejected yesterday. Very sorry on behalf of my country. He explained.
“If you can take Mutunga to the airport, lest he take care of the case, you have finished!” Lissu said in a lecture for Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu.
What did Maraga say after witnessing Lissu’s hearing?
Maraga, addressing the media, described the experience as lifting.
“It was very encouraging to see my brother, Tundu Lissu, in a happy state today in court. As a member of the community, I hold a firm in the hope that the coming legal process will be fair, fair, and urgent – reflecting the highest standards of justice, freedom and respect for humanity,” He said.
After the session, the court decided that Lissu should be remanded until June 2, 2025.
The prosecution told the court that investigations into the case of treason are still ongoing.
In the case of printing, they noted that several witnesses were organized, and heard the same date.
When Lissu was released out of court, he signed Chadema’s signature with two fingers, with his supporters singing together, “Without evolution, there is no choice.”

At the same time, Chadema condemned the ban and dismissal of Kenyan lawyers, referring to the incident as a violation of their basic rights and abuse of immigration protocols.
The party described the incident as a humiliating Pan-African solidarity, legal brotherhood, and regional cooperation under the East African Community system.
It said the move reflected a decrease in democratic position and an increase in political situation in the current administration of Tanzania.
CHADEMA demanded a formal apology to the lawmakers for the abuse they received.
