In a recent sermon, Pastor Ezekiel Odero criticized Kenyans for their constant complaint, saying that the situation had made the government unable to understand what steps to take.
“When the government raises money for the sugar industry you say they were stolen. If you decide to rent it, you are still complaining. Now you march – what do you want?” Said Odero.
He blamed Kenyans who oppose the sugar industry for being influenced by politicians organizing the opposition.
“No one tells you the truth. People are playing politics your life. I don’t speak on behalf of the government, I speak for you,” he added.
The preacher emphasized that the president has not sold the industries, as some Kenyans claim, but has rented it to private investors to save them from being completely closed.
He said that running the industry is important to the national economy, and it also helps sugarcane farmers to avoid losses, thus enabling them to meet their daily needs.
Ezekiel also urged residents of western Kenya to put their interests forward, rather than following the political leaders who encourage them to participate The procession.
“If you are not careful, your political leaders will make them poor to vote. I am not a politician, but I do not want people to play politics and your life. He warned.
Did Natembeya lead a protest against the sugar companies?
Ezekiel’s statements were made a few days after intense tensions on Monday, May 12, when Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, along with several officials encountered tear gas as they tried to enter the Nzoia Sugar Company factory in Bungoma.
The group was protesting against the government’s plan to rent the factory to the private investor, which is said to put the local economy at risk.
Photos and videos circulated by TUKO.co.ke showed a huge presence of policemen who had put on roadblocks and tried to prevent Natembeya’s caravan from reaching the factory.
Police officers were seen throwing tear gas into vehicles thought to be carrying protesters.
The leaders also criticized the proposed investor, claiming that he had previously dissolved the successful Pan Paper Mills factory.
Natembeya questioned the government’s logic to organize public companies facing financial challenges, while other institutions that go through such a situation are still controlled by the government.
