Speaking openly during his morning period at the classic 105 FM, Maina spoke of his views on the cultural customs of Africans, especially the exercise of transporting the deceased’s body in long distances to be buried in the ancestral land.

The discussion was fueled by recent news from the Ministry of Health, which announced that the Lang’ata cemetery, one of the largest places of burial in Nairobi, is full and will be closed soon.

The ministry has also noted that as a result of these cemeteries, families have begun to bury their loved ones over the existing cemeteries, which raises concerns about the management of burial areas.

Maina Kageni opposes the funeral traditions carried out by Africans

Maina Kageni described her frustration over the African tradition of transporting the deceased’s bodies, sometimes thousands of kilometers, buried on the ancestral land.

He questioned why such long trips are important, especially when other options such as burning dead bodies are available.

“It was declared full 20 years ago. What we do is bury our loved ones over other graves.“Maina said during the announcement.

He went on to say his disbelief in need of transporting body from far -off to America, and burials in Kenya, often at great cost.

“I have never understood this African concept of taking over the body more than 500 kilometers. We are dying in America, we want to bring the body back here to put it on the ground,” He said.

However, his host, Master King’angi, disagreed with it, emphasizing the cultural importance of burial on the land of the ancestors.

“One should be taken to the land of their ancestors buried there,” King’angi said, emphasizing the importance of respecting one’s roots and traditions in death.

Maina’s position about burning dead

Maina, known for her bold and sometimes controversial views, remained consistent in her position, asking a direct question to her host:

“Who cares what are you doing with my body?”

He then revealed a personal decision that had been made in the past – explained in his will that he would like to be buried one day after his death.

“I have put it into my will that I will be burned. It is in my will,” He said.

Explaining further about his decision, Maina criticized the financial problem that cultural funeral often places on the family.

He noted that the funeral is not only costly but can also put loved ones in a difficult financial situation due to the need to feed and entertain many mourners.

“What is the funeral to discourage those families because you must feed all these mourners, and some of the mourners don’t even care about the dead,” Maina explained.
