It is said that the perpetrators have been stealing crosses and tiles used to decorate and protect the cemetery.
Cemetery workers reported that suspects often destroy cemeteries at night or early in the morning.
They have called on the Tanzanian government to set up the cemetery to strengthen the defense.
Noel Meshack, one of the workers, noted that such cases began a short time ago, and attempts to prevent the thieves have failed.
He added that their efforts to keep the tomb safe for loved ones who visit their relatives have been weakened.
“At first they came to steal iron crosses, but now they are getting rid of the metal even around the cemetery, some have been arrested three or four times but they always end up escaping,” Said Meshack.
He has also advised citizens to avoid using metal when building cemeteries as the thieves usually sell those things as scrap.
Ally Mtowela, a local resident, said the situation is getting worse day by day. He called on security forces to patrol the cemeteries at night and early in the morning to stop the thieves.
“We have a serious problem here in Kola. The government has the ability to protect these cemeteries and should take action to make the area safe,” Said Ally.
He also noted that the collar is not the only cemetery that suffers from the damage. The thieves are reportedly walking between the cemeteries, stealing crosses, tiles and any metal placed in the cemetery.
Another employee explained that they arrived at work in the morning and left at eleven o’clock, making it difficult to protect the cemeteries out of those hours.
