Were was shot and killed on Wednesday, April 30, in the City Mortuary area as he returned from parliament.
How did Raila know about the death of Ongo Were?
Speaking at Were’s funeral in Kasipul on Friday, May 9, Raila revealed that the Secretary -General of the Federation of Trade Unions (COTU), Francis Atwoliphoned him to give him information about the incident.
Shocked, Raila said he had no idea which ODM MP had been shot, which forced him to ask Atwoli more.
“Atwoli called me and told me, ‘Sir, one of your MPs has been shot and killed.’ When I asked him, he replied, ‘Kasipul MP.’ Then I asked him where the story took place, he replied it was close to the city Mortuary, ” Raila Odinga narrated.

The ODM leader also said Atwoli informed him that Were had been followed for a long time before being attacked. Raila added that after hearing the news, he fled to Nairobi hospital where Were had been taken by the security guard and his driver for treatment.
Did Ongo Were knew those who killed him?
The former Prime Minister claimed that the Kasipul MP was killed by people who were known and close to him, insisting that the perpetrators were not strangers.
“So these people had been following him for a while, and they are known people. I hope the investigation will go to these people to be arrested,” Said Raila.
He acknowledged that the government had struggled to arrest several suspects but stressed that they were not the real organizers of the killings.
Raila claimed that the people in the hands of the police were agents who were hired to carry out the act, and that the main organizers had not yet been arrested.
