After two days of secret ballots within the Sistine Church, the 133 Cardinals of the Cardinal Council appointed Cardinal Robert Francis to be the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
The announcement was made by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, Protodeokon of the Council, from the Cathedral of St. Peter’s Cathedral in front of thousands of believers and pilgrims gathered under the cloudy sky of the Vatican. Mamberti’s voice was heard seriously:
“Annuntio Vobis Gaudium Magnum: Habemus Papam! Eminentissim Ac Reverendissim Dominum, Dominum Robert Francis, Cardinalem Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Prevost, Qui Sibi Nomen Imposuit today XIV.”
(“I proclaim to you great joy: We have the pope!
Cardinal Robert Francis, whose name was an international chat under prayer and rumors, appeared on Roshan shortly after wearing a white papal robe.
A great crowd exploded with joy, crying, songs, and flying flags from every corner of the world when the new Holy Father first appeared and gave the blessing of URBI et ORBI – “to the city and to the world.”
What is waiting for the 267th Pope, today of XIV?
Today’s XIV Pope, who now takes on the role of spiritual leadership with more than 1.3 billion Catholics in the world, becomes the 267th Pope in a series of popes returning to St. Peter himself over two thousand years ago.
He inherits a church full of religious legacy but also many modern challenges – ranging from the decline of western priests, financial change, global political conflicts, to calls for change of church teaching.
The new pope is seen by many as a bridge between the traditions and the new realities of the changing world.
The Conclave Conference, which started earlier this week inside the closed gates of the Sistine Church, brought together the voters of the under -80’s voters from every corner of the world.
Arrested with secrecy oaths, they discussed in silence and prayer, voting in phase until the same name received two -thirds of the vote as required.
Why is the Pope’s Pope today’s election of XIV a historical event?
For many believers, the election of Pope Leo of XIV, the American citizen, is a symbol of divine guidance and emotional action, especially since it occurs after the death of Pope Francis.
Pope Francis, who served for more than a decade, was respected worldwide for his humility, his position on climate change and social justice, as well as efforts to reform the Vatican Church.
The last vote, covered by the sacred mystery as is the custom of the Vatican, concluded by a new pope to accept the election and choose his papal name: Pope Leo of XIV today.
The process of heading for the election meeting was closely monitored, with major rumors about leading candidates, including Cardinals from Africa, Asia, and South America
Why didn’t Cardinal Njue attend the election meeting?
As previously reported, Cardinal John Njue, the only Kenyan delegate qualified to vote (under 80), claimed he was not invited to attend the Pope’s election meeting in the Vatican.
However, Nairobi’s archbishop Philip Anyolo denied the allegations that Njue received an official invitation through the Vatican’s apostolic embassy in Kenya.
Bishop Anyolo explained that Njue had informed the Vatican that he could not attend for health reasons.
However, Njue himself denied that he had health problems and said he did not refuse to attend for that reason.
The Vatican explained that cardinals under the age of 80 do not require an official invitation to attend the election meeting.
