The experienced diplomat and scholar has been appointed deputy chancellor of the University of Nairobi and the university council in a strategic step aimed at strengthening the institution’s leadership.

The University Council officially confirmed the appointment in a letter written on May 2, sent to Education Minister Julius Ogamba and the Chairman of the Council Ambukowa Anamukowa.

Ndemo was selected after a strict recruitment process conducted by the Public Service Commission (PSC), where he scored 84%of the highest scores.

He was followed by Duke Orata who got 73%, and Francis Mulaa at 66.7%.

His appointment comes following the end of Professor Margaret Jesang Hutchinson as Acting Vice -Chancellor on May 5.

Why shouldn’t Bitange Ndemo take her new UON VC immediately?

The internal communications that TUKO.co.ke gave an eye on the fact that Ndemo is currently in the process of handing over his embassy responsibilities in Brussels, and then moving to Nairobi to hold the post.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chancellor Professor Francis Jackim Mulaa has been appointed to serve as a VC in Acting.

“In addition to the letter of your appointment as a deputy chancellor, it has also been appointed to the Vice -Chancellor for six months from May 5, to keep the castle of the vice -chancellor appointed Elijah Bitange Ndemo,” It reads the communication section from the university council.

The return of Ndemo is expected to add more experience due to its history in public service, diplomacy, and profession, the qualities that the University of Nairobi hopes to guide its vision of academic excellence and institutional reforms.

His appointment also comes when many public universities in Kenya face leadership conflicts, financial problems, and call for administrative reform.
