Mombasa: 4 people died after falling to the septic tank watching the Manu Match

At least four people are feared dead after an entertainment time collapsed on Sunday, April 20, Bamburi Last, Mombasa County.

The restaurant, known as Arsy Video Café, was built directly on a sewage tank estimated to be over 40 years old.

The event took place at 6:30 pm with tens of football fans gathered to watch the Premier League match between Manchester United By Wolverhampton FC.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the floor of the palace suddenly slipped, and plunged into the tank.

“They were watching the football match when the floor of the hall came in, and they were trapped in. They have not been found so far. Everything fell, including television screens,” Nuru Sadati, relative of one of the victims.

According to a report of the incident presented at the Kadzandani police station under OB No. 37/20/04/2025, a local resident, Mwavioga Omar, warned after witnessing the restaurant collapsed while several people were still inside.

Police officers, shield officers, and the Mombasa County disaster unit responded to the alert and rushed to the scene to help.

What did government officials say about the Bamburi incident?

The structure was reported to be used as a popular venue for football and cinematography, but investigations revealed that it was built illegally without the official consent of the building.

The aging sewage tank underneath it was very weak for a while, and eventually fell under the mass of the crowd.

Confirming the incident, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Noor said emergency teams were sent quickly following a collapse.

“This section used to watch football videos for Luck Bad was built on a sewer tank. Unfortunately, the tank sank and collapsed, and two to four people are said to have been trapped, “Noor said.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the collapse of the structure was due to a combination of congestion and the affected foundation.

The area is besieged as rescue operations continue, with the authorities working to determine how many remaining people are stuck in the sewer tank.

In an incident related to that previously reported by TUKO.co.ke, two students at the Ramba Boys school in Siaya lost their lives on March 22, after a sewage tank in the institution withdrew from them.

Two others in attendance survived the crash and was rushed to hospital while emergency staff from the Kenyan Red Cross and the national police service working on bodies and protecting the scene.

The tragedy sparked outrage among parents who blamed the school leadership for negligence and timely communication following the incident.
