Echoes of War: Butere Girls Stranger, leaving the hall crying their heads down

Students at the Butere Girls High School on Thursday, April 10, chose not to play their Echoes of War drama expected at the Kenyan national drama and films, citing a series of frustrations and threats.

As they climbed on the platform at eight o'clock in the morning, students were reportedly deprived of the public address system – an important tool that is provided during the festival. Since there are no audio and decorative devices on the platform, the girls could not continue the show.

Instead, they stood in honor, sang the Kenyan national anthem, and went out of the platform crying.

In a video that TUKO.co.ke watched, the students who appeared to be strong were caught running out of the hall where the game was scheduled to be played. They claimed to have been abused and intentionally established for failure.

Adding their sadness, the students said they had not met with their game director, Cleophas Malala, for several weeks and were not given the right time to practice towards the national game.

“Lord Cleophas where we want him, we don't go back to Butere,” They shouted for answers about where he was.

The situation seemed to reflect the broader efforts to suppress performance. Aside from lack of basic resources, the students also faced an empty venue – denied the audience that would witness their game, which has sparked national debate on its political topics.

The drama was previously rejected during the Western regional drama festival under incomprehensible conditions. However, the Supreme Court later restored it, ordering to be included in the national column.

The controversy escalated on Wednesday, April 9, when the author of the drama and former Kakamega senator, Cleophas Malala, was prevented from arriving at the Festival at Kirobon Girls High School.
