Harambee Stars Defender Makes CAF Confederation Cup History After His South African Club Stuns Zamalek

Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela will be part of a Stellenbosch team that will play in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final for the first time in the club’s history.

Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela has an opportunity to play in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final after his club Stellenbosch FC reached the last four for the first time ever.

Mandela was not involved on Wednesday as Stellenbosch faced Egyptian giants and defending champions Zamalek in the second leg of their quarter-final in Cairo, looking for a win after a goalless first leg in South Africa last week.

Steve Barker’s team would win 1-0 on enemy territory when South African star Sihle Nduli scored in the 80th minute and they put in a resolute defensive display to win the match against their more illustrious hosts, who were favourites to win when the draw was made.

Mohammed Bajaber has become a cult hero after his starring role for Harambee Stars in March and he has been told what he must do to remain in the plans of coach Benni McCarthy.

There were few chances in the contest with Stellenbosch testing the opposing goalkeeper in the 51st minute when Lesiba Nku let fly and that was the only chance before Nduli’s goal.

After their win, Stellenbosch will now play Tanzanian giants Simba in the semi-final, the club coached by South African tactician Fadlu Davids.

Simba eliminated another Egyptian club Al Masry 4-2 on post-match penalties on Wednesday after both sides had played out a 2-2 draw on aggregate.

Mandela did not make the matchday squad for the match against Zamalek but he will hope to play a part in the semi-final when his club plays at that level for the first time in their history.
