Mandera: 5 chiefs kidnapped 2 months ago by alleged al-Shabaab were released

Mandera – Five chiefs who were kidnapped by suspected al-Shabaab militants two months ago have been released, thus ending the extreme conflict and being concerned about national security.

The chiefs were released on Sunday evening, April 6, after being abandoned by unknown people near the Kenyan and Somali border.

According to local authorities, their independence followed a successful negotiations led by regional elders in coordination with security agencies.

When were the 5 Mandera chiefs kidnapped?

The managers were kidnapped while officially on duty, on their way from Wargadud to Elwak City on February 3.

They were scheduled to attend the President's visit to plan William Ruto in the northeast region.

The chiefs – identified as Mohamed Noor Hache, Mohamed Adawa (Wargadud City), Abdi Hassan (Qurahmudow), Mohamed Hassan (East Wargadud), and Assistant Chief Ibrahim Gabow – were serving in administrative units in the East Wargadud areas, Qurahmudow, and Chachabole.

Sources revealed that the kidnappers were blindfolded and transported to the Somali border shortly after the arrest, which raised serious concerns and caused immediate intervention from the government and community elders.

Ruto, addressing the incident, suggested that the militants targeted chiefs to take revenge on operations enhanced by Kenyan security teams in the area.

What happened after the Mandera chiefs disappeared?

Efforts to safely release the officers were ongoing, with government officials commending the local elders' role in reconciling the rebels.

Interior ministry secretary Raymond Omollo addressed the kidnapping of the chiefs and said that great efforts were continuing to be witnessed, although specific details could not be exposed publicly.

Omollo dismissed the use of military force for rescue, expressing concerns about possible dangers for life.

He highlighted the complexity of terrorism and the need to handle carefully to avoid harm to the officers.

Additionally, Omollo noted that the incident emphasizes joint security, and shows that no one cannot face threats of insecurity.
