Contractors dealing with various government projects in Bungoma County say many are stuck despite using the necessary resources.

In some markets, citizens have started stealing metal and other building materials, since contractors have failed to install a fence in those areas.
The markets visited include a large market, with a budget of Shs 370 million, the Chwele Market, planned for Sh 340 million, the captive market, costing Sh50 million, and the Malachic market, which also cost Sh50 million.
These projects were launched by the President William Ruto During last year's Power Celebrations.

Why are the projects launched in Bungoma stuck?

Sankei expressed sadness by the contractors, saying they were blocking the government's development agenda.
“The government is trying to make sure that all its projects launched in Bungoma are completed on time, but they have contractors like the one working on these projects are the ones who drop us; Sankei complained.

He called on the relevant agencies and paid the contractors to do so immediately, to allow work to continue in those areas.
“We should not blame the contractors; those responsible for payment processing should take immediate action to ensure that contractors can start work and prevent further delays in these projects,” He said.
“Some contractors in Bungoma can't give it, which is why we are behind,” Sankei added.
Businesses who had previously been doing business in these markets have raised concerns about vulnerability, calling on the government to speed up the completion of those markets so that they can return to their booths.

“Several months ago, the sun was burning, and we had to sell our products under the heat. Now, we are rain, and some of our products are damaged. We want this market to be completed so that we can start normal operations,” Said Harriet Amoit, a businessman in the Malaysian market.
“This market was launched last April and was to be completed in six months. Now, a year later, we lose hope of owning it,” he added.
Allan Luvungu, a representative from the government submission unit, said they have visited several projects in Bungoma, noting that many are stuck.
“Today, we visited government projects, but we have been saddened by some contractors who are delaying development. We have discussed and identified challenges,” He said.
Luvungu went on to say that the team has prepared a report and will advise the Government to the next steps.
