Six police officers serving at the center have also been relocated after the station accumulated KSh 2 million of unpaid taxes.
The inhabitants of Riandira and surrounding areas in the Mutithi ward left on Monday, March 24 with open mouths as they witnessed the officers loading their property on a police truck at midnight.
The detachment has left the community concerned about the future of security in the area, especially after the long police presence since 2016.
“Where are they going? The police have played a major role in bringing security here since 2016. Now what are we going to do?” Alimaka Grace Wanjiru, an anxious host.
Reason for closure of the Riandira police station
“Before my father died he told me the officers to start paying taxes from 2018, but arrears have increased to Ksh 2 million, and that's why we decided to take our building and hire others,” explained Irene Njeri, her daughter Thuita.
The businessman's family also confirmed that Thuita had bought the farm to build a police station and a development that had never been done.
“We will also take the plots if it is not yet developed” Njeri added.
Residents expressed their anger saying they were not well informed about the previous information.
Another resident said the closure of the center has raised concerns about the increase in crime in the area.
“Livestock theft has become a major issue here, and now we are living with fear especially if this area is under development of new business,” he said.
When asked about the matter, the Western County Police Commander Rashid Ali confirmed the closure of the police station.
However, he assured residents that they would be served by Rukanga Patrol Base in four kilometers from the area.
