The county leader has not been seen in public for months, with allegations rife that he had quietly moved abroad.
However, in a statement on Friday, January 17, the governor explained that he went on vacation and that his position was being held by his deputy, David Kones.
Kihika assured the residents of Nakuru that he will return to work soon.
“Following the many calls I have received regarding my absence from work, as the elected Governor of Nakuru County, I would first like to assure the people of Nakuru that I am safe and currently on maternity leave. As I thank the people of Nakuru for their concern, I assure you with a warm heart that the delivery of services in our Central County continues as planned under the firm leadership of the team led by the Deputy Governor, Honorable David Kones. I have no doubts about Mr. Kones' ability to lead in my absence. I will officially be back at work at the end of my vacation in the next few weeks,” he said.

Kihika, who is the third governor of Nakuru a year after being elected in 2022 and beating Lee Kinyanjui, is widely recognized as a close ally of the President William Ruto.
Why Susan Kihika yelled at Kenyans
Kihika has criticized Kenyans for their constant opposition to President Ruto's political and official efforts.
In October last year, the county leader appeared to be disturbed by the thoughts and culture of Kenyans opposing the Ruto government's policies and plans.
Kihika explained that the president often faces great challenges in leading the country due to strong opposition from the citizens.
For example, Kihika wondered why many Kenyans were against a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative between the Kenyan government and foreign organizations to improve critical domestic infrastructure.
His statement followed citizens' concerns about Adani Group's plan to take over the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to renovate it for decades.
He also wondered how Kenyans want the government to get revenue to fund its projects while opposing the government to borrow or take measures to collect taxes.
Kihika asked Kenyans to support the president in order to achieve the plans he had for the country, saying that the plans are beneficial and with good intentions.
