The son of one of the victims painfully recounted the events before the incident while clearly remembering his last conversation with his mother on November 26.

Kelizi Silunjili said they had agreed that she would accompany her mother to cultivate the next day because her sister was sick and needed to go to the hospital.

“My last conversation with him was yesterday before he died. We were in the field with mother when she was weeding.

“I asked him to tell me who will accompany me to the field the next day to plow and even suggested my sister, but he refused, saying my sister is still young and he said he will come with me,” he narrated.

However, he had to take shelter in the building his father had built as the rain started a few minutes later.

He explained that he and his family hid there until they heard a child crying outside, alone.

“We heard a child crying in the distance; after looking around, I saw my younger sister running towards the shelter with tears in her eyes. He said our mother was lying on the ground,” he said.

The young man remembers running towards the place where he left his mother and found him and his aunt lying on the ground.

“My father arrived at the scene and was stunned and did not know what to do. My uncle came and arranged how the bodies would be transported from the scene,” he added.
