This is after Mauritius withdrew its candidacy and supported the former prime minister.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, November 26, by Pauline Njoroge, a senior member of Raila's campaign team.

“Mauritius, which had presented a candidate for the AUC Chairmanship will now support Raila Odinga's request. This was presented today by the new Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, during a telephone conversation with President Ruto,” Njoroge said.

Why has Mauritius withdrawn from running for the AUC seat?

The decision represents a change in strategy for Mauritius, whose previous candidate was endorsed by former prime minister Pravind Jugnauth.

Ramgoolam's rise to power following a closely contested election has brought new priorities to Mauritius' foreign policy, with a clear focus on accommodating Raila's AUC bid.

“The Mauritius candidate had been endorsed by former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, who was defeated by Navin in the recently held elections,” added Njoroge.

The withdrawal of the Mauritian candidate is a big boost for Raila, who has been seeking support from across the continent.
